Palmetto’s path to the playoffs is suddenly clear. The Mustangs (3-5, 1-2), who lost four of five before beating Southside 46-30 on Friday, now only need a win this week over Carolina and a Southside loss to Chesnee to make the playoffs.

Of course, Palmetto’s 0-2 start in the region could be attributed to playing two of the three best teams in the region. Against Southside, though, Palmetto got back to its trademark.

“We kept the ball a good bit,” coach Jody LeCroy said. “We threw the ball well when we had to throw it. They just couldn’t stop us.”

The Mustangs also did it without senior offensive tackle Michael Palmer, who sat out with a concussion. LeCroy said he expects Palmer to return this week.

Against Carolina on Friday, Palmetto will face a team that started 3-0, but has since dropped five straight games, including 58-6 against Woodruff on Friday.

While the Trojans are 3-5 and 0-3 in Region 2-AA after not scoring a point in region play last year.
