Sept. 23 releases
A popular cable show gets the big screen treatment, Hugh Jackman gets scary, and Tinseltown comes to Anderson in next weeks DVD releases.
It’s always fun to see our fair city of Anderson in the movies, so next week should be fun as it brings us the long-awaited DVD release of “Leatherheads” (Universal Studios, $28.99 SRP, PG-13). Who can forget the excitement the city experienced when George Clooney brought this romantic football comedy to our neck of the woods last year? If you missed it on the big screen (and box office results showed that you probably did), here’s your chance to watch it in the comfort of home. The DVD features many special features including feature commentary by Clooney, deleted scenes, The Making of Leatherheads, a visual effects featurette, and more.
I never caught the show during its initial run, but the big screen version of “Sex And The City” (New Line Home Video, $24.98 SRP, R) proved to be as big of a hit as the cable series was, attracting loyal viewers and making a few new fans along the way. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon all reprised their roles from the hit series for this romantic comedy that sees the group reunite to catch up on old times, remember old flames and shop, shop, shop. The 2-disc special edition boasts a load of extra features, including commentary, a behind the scenes look at the production, interviews, and more.
A disconnected accountant finds his mundane life injected with a new sense of urgency after striking up a friendship with a charismatic attorney in the clever thriller “Deception” (20th Century Fox, $22.99 SRP, R), starring Ewan McGregor and Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman. And who wouldn’t want to watch Jackman chew scenery for 90 minutes? The DVD comes with several special features including deleted scenes, director commentary, and a featurette called “Exposing the Deception: The Making of the Film”.
Those looking for a good laugh should check out “Run Fatboy Run” (Warner Home Video, $24.99 SRP, PG-13), director David Schwimmer’s (yes, that guy from “Friends”) comical look at love that stars funnyman Simon Pegg (of “Hot Fuzz” and “Shaun Of The Dead” fame…if you haven’t checked those gut wrenchingly hilarious films out yet, I suggest you do so immediately!). It’s not easy to win back a woman after leaving her at the altar, but when an out-of-shape man finally realizes just what a mistake he’s made, he vows to run a high-profile marathon in order to convince his ex-fiancée that the rich and handsome man she’s about to marry isn’t the guy for her. The DVD comes with only a handful of special features that include trailers, a commentary, and a behind the scenes feature, but is worth the price of a rental for the movie alone.
And my cult pick of the week is a no-brainer. “The Godfather Trilogy: The Coppola Restoration” is all three classic “Godfather” films, beautifully restored and filled with extra features galore. If you’ve seen the films then you know why it’s a must buy. If you haven’t, then here’s your chance to catch up on some of the best motion pictures ever made (well, the first 2 anyway...I suppose we could have done without the third film).
Other notable releases this week include “Grease: The Rockin’ Rydell Edition” (Paramount, $18.99 SRP, PG), an all-new transfer of the fan favorite film, and “Schoolhouse Rock: The Election Collection” (Walt Disney Pictures, $29.99 SRP, Unrated), just in time for the upcoming race.
