Sometimes lost in the excitement about Anderson native Bailey Hanks and her rapid ascension on the Broadway ladder is the reality that there are many Upstaters who have and are making their mark on the entertainment world.
One such talented individual is Kimilee Bryant, a former Miss South Carolina and Broadway performer who is to return to her home state for a performance Tuesday at the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts at Clemson University.
Bryant will take the stage as part of “Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway.” As a performer of many of the musical’s songs, she is uniquely qualified and excited to show off for a hometown audience.
“It will be very interesting to do a show near home,” Bryant said in a phone interview from her home in New York City. “I don’t think many of my friends or family have ever seen this and it will all be new to them.”
The show reviews the last 100 years of Broadway musicals. At the time of the interview, Bryant said the exact song list had not been hammered down, but that she expected it to include selections from “Rent,” “West Side Story,” “Les Miserables,” “Chicago,” “My Fair Lady” and, of course, “Phantom of the Opera.”
Bryant played the role of Christine Daae in “Phantom” on Broadway, as well as in Switzerland and Toronto. She also performed with the touring production and in many other productions from “H.M.S. Pinafore” to “Bye Bye Birdie.” For “100 Years” Bryant expects one of her most challenging roles.
“This show is different from eight shows a week on Broadway,” she said. “You are doing so many different characters, you don’t have a storyline and it’s all highlights of different shows. But we make it fit together and pace it just right for a great evening.”
Bryant grew up in Greenville and studied dance and acting. She performed all over the Upstate, including community theater and church productions in Anderson, Greenville, Clemson and Traveler’s Rest, among others.
But Broadway was always a dream of hers and she made that happen as soon as possible.
“I wanted to be a movie star, a ballerina and Miss America,” Bryant said. “Well, I played the part of a ballerina in ‘Phantom’ and got pretty close for Miss America, winning the talent portion when I competed. And though I have done some work in film, dreams do change sometimes.”
In addition, Bryant is promoting her first CD. Titled “My Favorite Things,” she recently released it in the Upstate and hopes to share some of her favorite works with audiences.
The show will be at 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students. For more information, call 864.656.7787 or go online to www.clemson.edu/Brooks.
