Even with Laurens’ 42-0 loss to Dorman on Friday, the Raiders still have something that their fellow Region 1-AAAA rivals don’t — more than two wins.
We’ve become accustomed to Greenwood being a step ahead of everyone else, but this year it’s Laurens (5-1) under second-year coach Greg Lawson. Before the humbling loss to the Cavaliers, the Raiders had scored 30 points in four games, and held three opponents to seven points or less.
Laurens hadn’t started 5-0 since 1987, and hasn’t started 5-1 since 1996.
As for the rest of the teams, T.L. Hanna and Westside have had trouble developing consistent offenses, while Wren can short circuit the scoreboard with its offense, its defense has shown some holes. Easley is still looking for its first win of the season.
If there’s one surprise outside of Laurens, it’s that Greenwood is 2-4. The Eagles have had three games where they scored 11 points or less, all losses to Dorman, Spartanburg and Sumter.
To boost their offense, the Eagles installed the read-option in practice last week after starting the season in the I-formation and shotgun. Greenwood used the read-option last year with running quarterback Jay Spearman.
