— Toccoa police still were trying as of Thursday evening to sort out all the details of an accident in Stephens County that killed a Stephens County man Thursday and seriously injured the woman who was with him.

Around 9 a.m., a flatbed tractor-trailer was headed north on Broad Street when it tried to turn around by backing into a nearby parking area near where Broad Street intersects with Hayes Street in Toccoa. A Ford Ranger traveling south on Broad Street ran into the trailer section of the tractor-trailer, according to Toccoa Police Assistant Chief Tim Jarrell.

“The male passenger of the Ranger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the female driver was taken to Stephens County Hospital and then airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital,” said Jarrell.

Information regarding the woman’s condition was unavailable Thursday.

Toccoa police, the Georgia State Patrol, the Stephens County Emergency Response Unit and Stephens County emergency medical services responded to the scene, which shut down Broad Street for roughly three hours.

Jarrell said Thursday night that police were not releasing the names of the victims or the driver of the tractor-trailer until the next of kin can be notified. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, officials said.

A decision regarding criminal charges is pending until the investigation is complete, Jarrell said.
