ANDERSON COUNTY Violence broke out Sunday in Anderson when an 18-year-old man returned home from a gay pride parade and was assaulted by his father.
According to the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, the battering took place about 1 p.m. Sunday on P Street.
During the assault, the teen's 49-year-old father yelled, cursed, swung a baseball bat, prayed and tried to “cast the demon of homosexuality out of him,” according to the teen's version of events to Deputy S.C. Weymouth, the incident report states.
About 2 p.m. Wednesday, the teen said his father punched him when he returned to the house for clothes that he left on Sunday, the report states.
The teen told deputies that his father “has a problem with him being gay and that is why he hit him with the baseball bat Sunday,” Weymouth said in his report.
The teen filed both complaints about 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Deputies, who have not been able to make immediate contact with the teen's father, report that both incidents are under investigation.

This poor kid. I wish the worst possible on his father. No one deserves that. i see the kids mother isnt mentioned in this.. im' sure she took off long ago to get rid of this biggot from her life.
Hopefully they do something about this... This should be considered a hate crime... even tho it was his father.. its still a hate crime... and he should be punished.. see how his dad likes the receiving end of things in jail. hahaha
Mr. Adams, Was that first paragraph really necessary to report a news story, or are you once again practicing sensationalism?
Reading your so-called "crime" stories is more entertaining than standing in line at Wal Mart; sneaking glimpses at the "National Inquirer." (...And hoping no one will see me...)

In response to Dixieman... What bible are you reading from. What about praying for him and forgiving. Christ never lined anyone up and gun them down.
I also live in the BIBLE BELT! My bible says to love everyone. It also says fathers love your children. It does NOT say to love your children only if they are not gay! This man is insane! This is a hate crime!

You Christian Socialists are the problem. It's one thing when Islamo-fascists call America, the greatest nation on earth, an immoral nation and hate us for our freedoms. But when our own people are doing the terrorists' work for them! If you don't like living in the free-est nation in the world, then maybe Iran is a better place for you to live.
for all of you here that are wishing bad for the father, well, you are no better than him, there are two sides to every story and only one is presented here. I'm not condoning what he did but to say you hope the worst for him, speaks a lot for YOUR character too and, from where I sit, it's not good.
Oh please, SCMOM,
... the man went at his teenaged son with a BAT! There is no other side. A person's sexuality is gonna be what its gonna be and no amount of bludgeoning will change it. One would think a 49 yr old would already know that.
in response to TaylorSiluwe
how do you know his son hadn't done anything before that? how do you know he wasn't defending himself? you don't.
a lot of people are soo quick to make judgements soley on what you read in the paper or see on the news.
If homosexuality is so evil, why do these fathers look at magazines with girl-on-girl pictures? You see them buying these sorts of magazines all the time. Seems to me that opposition to homosexuality stops at "two hot chicks" with these morons.
in response to Dixieman
So it is up to you to judge people. The bible that I read says there are no degrees of sin and that the only one who can judge is God. Guess you missed that part.

HA! I bet you think the Bible was written in English, too?
Homosexuality is a sin and an admonition to God, but hate is also. No man shall enter heaven if he hates his brother. Instead of beating his son, he should have loved and prayed for God to transform his son. God is much better at transforming sin than we would every be, because we (humans) have all sinned and come short of the glory of God.
Let me start by saying I am a christian and I am southern by birth.(just so I don't get the liberal Yankee crap)
Everyday I read about more violence in the name of god, my god DOES NOT promote judging other. You can make the King James Bible support any belief by taking things out of context. READ IT FROM COVER TO COVER study it, use a dictionary, and then try to support your Nazi beliefs!
Dixieman: Anytime you wish to come over and violate my First Amendment rights, don't be surprised if I exercise my Second Amendment rights.
@ Dixieman: Wow... First off it amazes me that people are still reading the King James Version. EVERY reputable bible scholar in the world has agreed that it is an errant copy of an errant Latin text and that King James authorized a few tweaks here and there so it was more in line with his beliefs. Second if you want to quote Leviticus and take it literally you'd probably need to look inward a bit. There are many laws in Leviticus that practically no one follows today (i.e. eating pork, planting multiple crops in the same field..garden anyone?, and pastors being free from blemishes, eye defects, physical disabilities, and having perfect testicles - Leviticus 21:16-21). I doubt you've looked under your pastors robe lately...else you might have to consider yourself amongst the "queers."
In response to Mom2Shelties:
It's called a story lead, and there's really nothing sensational about it, although it probably should have included the word "allegedly."
Re: Dixieman ... puhleez. Not everyone believes in your King James Version Bible, or even the Christian canons at all, and that's THEIR business. You (thankfully) don't get to dictate anyone's morality but your own. And boy, you're doing a bang-up job!
Ya can't do anything to a guy like Dixieman that "God" didn't already do!
The King James Version also says it is an abomination to eat shell fish so I hope Dixieman doesn't get that off the bar ar Ryans.
Guy, how can you be so quick to leap to judgment. Remember, this is Pearce writing this article. First of all the story is written completely from the statement of an eighteen year old. Who is to say even one word of it is true. The article says the alleged battery took place 1PM Sunday and he waited until Wednesday to report it. Where is the hospital report? If someone is beaten with a bat where are the marks and bruises or injuries? Something is very suspicious about all this and until the father is interviewed I think it would be wise to withhold judgment.
The kid may be on drugs and robbed the house blind and that is why the father chased him away for all we know. The whole gay thing might be a distraction to get sympathy. Wouldn't be the first time a drug crazed eighteen year old was chased away from home and lied about it. Who knows until we have the whole story.
To Dixieman, re: I'm reading from the correct Bible, which is the King James version. You know, the one that states that it's an abomination before God, for a man to lay with another men, and these people are to be destroyed.
As you are no doubt a frequent reader of the Word, you certainly know that it is also an abomination before God to eat catfish, shrimp and pork (Lev. 11:9-10) or to remarry someone you have already divorced (Deut. 24:1-4), right? You, of course, would advocate murdering people who break these commandments too. Right?
Will people ever stop trying to impose their religious beliefs on others???
Hopefully this family can pull it together with the help of an organization such as PFLAG - www.pflagupstatesc.org, or Chris Kids - www.chriskids.org.
I do not support Homosexuals but this young man is going to take enough crap during his lifetime you would think he could at least count on his family. I will do anything to make my childrens lives easier. If you are not going to support your children and look out for them you should not have children. People like this should be put in a stockade in town square and there should be baskets of stones sitting around so you can go down there during the day and stone him.
in response to The_Shark
Again, where is the proof he was even struck with a bat? The reporting officer surely would have noted contusions and injury from being beaten with a bat. Maybe he brandished or menaced him with a bat and the kid is exaggerating. My whole point is shouldn't we know the whole story, told from both sides before, before going postal on the father?
in response to CLEMSONAJ
excellent comment on the creation of the King James Bible, ClemsonAJ.
If some people paid attention in History classes, maybe they'd understand that the Christian BIBLE was actually put together by the 5 Popes in 410 A.D. from all the collection of writings prior. The 5 Popes decided what would go into the BIBLE and what would not. The BIBLE is comprised of two sections: The Old Testament (from Judaism) and the New Testament.
The writings that were NOT included in the New Testament were stored in Rome, where the ones that were not destroyed still remain.
Over time, there began to be some dissention and disagreement between the 5 Popes, whereby each of the Popes argued that they were the "real" Pope. It resulted in the Carthagenian and Alexandrian Popes giving in to the Roman Pope (Roman Catholic Church), while the Constantine Pope (Russian Orthodox today) and the Athenian Pope (Greek Orthodox today) and the Roman Pope had a huge battle of words, culminating in the excommunication of each other in the year 1067. They remained as such until they finally came to an accord in 1967 whereby they each UN-excommunicated each other.
In the meanwhile, the Roman Catholic Church, which had become a world power, began having some dissention from within itself and in the 1490's, a Roman Catholic Priest in Germany named Martin Luther decided to take advantage of the Gutenberg Press' invention , posted his "95 Theses" on the entrance door to his church, and began his own church, starting the Protestant Church idea.
Years after, a guy named John Calvin also broke away from Catholicism and began the Calvinist movement. Henry XVIII (for those who cannot read Roman numerals, it's Henry the Eighth... the King of England) got mad at the Catholic Church because the Catholic Church did not accept divorce, so he kicked the Catholic Church out of England and started his own Anglican Church.
King James later on decided to change the BIBLE into his own and created his own VERSION of the Christian Bible.
Just a bit of condensed history.

As a "flaming liberal", I'm very happy to see the support for this young man that's been posted here. :)) I hope he sees it, too.
As an add-on post to Capt_Leo's excellent historical post: "The Tudors", a Showtime series going into it's 3rd season, has shown some of the history of England's break from the Catholic church and the beginning of Protestantism. Very entertaining & educational.
I agree with Vanhoose here. It's easy to see the pro-gay/anti-Christianity scenario that's being painted (deliberately?) by the AIM story and most of those who have commented, but I think there's far more to this story than just an issue of a father having problems with an ADULT son (the story says he's 18, at least) because he's gay.
Is it possible the son was also disrespectful and belligerent in his father's house, and the father responded accordingly?
I have five children, all of whom reached adulthood (although two of them very grudgingly.) I never went after any of them with a baseball bat, but Lord knows there were times when a jury probably would have acquitted me if I had. And it had nothing to do with their sexual preferences.
The AIM's push for more "local, local, local" news is to be commended, because that is what your local daily newspaper should emphasize.
But incomplete stories like this one - where no one has charged in what is obviously a domestic issue - give people the opportunity to DEMONIZE one side on the basis of the frequently exaggerated version of facts by the other side without fully exploring the full facts.
No one should be assaulted with a baseball bat simply because they happen to be homosexual, but I really think there's more to this story than we have been given.
I'll withhold judgment on that father until I've seen all those facts - including his version of the story. And, since the AIM chose to give us one side of the story today, I am absolutely sure the other side of the story will get equal treatment when these charges are (probably) dropped in the near future. ;)

Just for those who can't WRITE Roman Numerals, Henry XVIII would be "Henry the Eighteenth." The king the writer was referring to was actually Henry VIII.

Next time there is a hate crime in Anderson Co. I wonder if AIM will turn your registered info over to the police......
I've used a two by four on a guy with a slugger before.
It looks very, very painful.
Cannot imagine doing this to a family member.
Christian friends, remember, there was one special love in the life of Jesus and that person was a man. There is no doubt about it. Read the gospel of John.
Anyone who suggests this is OK or in anyway permissible is basically a terrible human being who has no compassion for a fellow human being. And if you cite the words of some book to make this OK, I can assure you, you're going to hell with all the other people who've wielded a sword with one hand while offering lip service to the words of Jesus. Its a lot easier to be a piece of judgmental garbage than to be like Christ who offered judgment on no one but simply awful humans like this.
in response to mommy08
A "hate crime?" Is that what this is being called already with only half the story out?
This is one of many reasons reporters need to be careful about relying on victims' statements taken from police incident reports.
The verifiable facts can be found in the officers' statements. Everything else goes in a totally different category following the words "alleged" or "according to the victim ..." It is one side of the story, and if one side of the story allows the other side to be pilloried in public by people with a political agenda, it is all but irresponsible to publish that incomplete story.
I recall once reading an incident report about an elderly man suffering from dementia - but still living alone - who discharged a shotgun through a sliding glass door of his home because he thought he was under assault by "dead people."
Obviously, he wasn't. The real story was that the poor fella shouldn't have been living alone in his condition, especially in a home with loaded weapons. When officers responded, it could have turned into a tragic situation. (THAT would have been a story.)
Had I followed the logic of THIS story, I would have taken that incident report, written a story, and put a big headline on it that said: "Deranged Man Threatens Officers With Shotgun."
But I didn't. He was no criminal. He needed help, not public scorn, not public ridicule.
Making sensational headlines out of non-stories is National Enquirer stuff. It's sensationalism. The Anderson Independent-Mail is better than that.
It may well turn out that the son's allegations in this case are accurate. If so, that father will pay a price, part of which is learning there are better ways of handling issues involving adult children whose lifestyles you abhor than with a baseball bat. But, for now, we just don't know what really happened.
Local law enforcement officers file thousands of incident reports every year. From having looked at thousands of those reports myself over the years, I can tell you there's some really interesting stuff in them. The vast majority of that stuff is a waste of a reporter's time, especially if the report involves a DOMESTIC situation and the only evidence you have is person's word against another.
Stories like this play to the prejudices on both sides of the social issues of the day. There is no excuse for inflaming those prejudices unless you have FACTS, not hearsay.
This is surely a case of "local, local, local" coverage featuring "sloppy, sloppy, sloppy" reporting. Fortunately, such missteps really are quite rare for the Independent-Mail.
Just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Excellent catch, JDTippet! I appreciate your catching my typo and correcting me on that one so the readers would know the right Roman numeral as being VIII instead of what I posted (XVIII). I'm actualluy glad my fingers must have not struck the C key hard enough or something, or it would have otherwise read Henry XCVIII which would have really looked bad.
But then, I usually run out of erasers before I run out of pencil, White-out is my most used office product, and I usually wear out my delete and backspace keyts out before any other key.

From someone who knows the situation, the kid is seeking revenge against his father because he threw away his porn stash, which was found in the kids bedroom. There was no assault on either day. The kid is making it all up.
We don't really know the full story.
I have 3 gay nephews/neices. It is very common for gays to have a very domineering parent. Although it is different parents in my case, this applies to them perfectly. If this story is true, this dad is definitely a controlling & domineering man.
It would shock some to know how many gays are in our District 5 schools (especially females that are bi-sexual). I walked into a District 5 football game restroom & two were kissing. Times have changed. You see it more openly in larger towns, but it is increasingly more common here. It is very hard for some parents to handle, but we should not judge them. I hope the father really didn't do this to his son. Time will tell!
in response to JDTippett
Read the 3rd and 9th posts...2 others, besides myself, thought this sounded like a hate crime based solely on what was written in this article. IF this article is found to be 100% factual on all sides, then it is a hate crime.
No, Mommy08. Our very liberal society nowadays has cheapened the term "hate crime" to the point that it is no longer recognizable, to the detriment of people who really ARE victims of such crimes.
It has been my experience that a rebellious teenager (I was one of those once) is far more likely to say to his father, "I hate you" than for a father to say the same to a son or daughter. Whatever it was that provoked that father - if anything - I would bet this situation goes far beyond the son's sexual orientation.
By the way, in my humble opinion, society has also cheapened the words "racism" and "rape" in the past three decades to the point that TRUE victims get lost in the cacophony of those who are looking for reasons to cry "victim" even if those reasons are tenuous at best.
I'll say again - we don't know all the facts here, and until we do, I think it's wrong to paint the father as either the perpetrator of a "hate crime" or as a man who is so homophobic that he would attack his son with a baseball bat for no reason other than that son's homosexuality.
Things are not always what they appear to be, and the relationships between parents and their children nowadays are much more complicated than they need to be.
In my younger days, I found many, many reasons to disagree with my parents and to throw my late-60s "I'm-always-right-and-you're-always-wrong" liberalism in their faces. But the one thing I always recognized was that, as long as I was in their house, I had to follow their rules - especially once I turned 18.
From the Merriam-Webster dictionary:
Main Entry: hate crime
Function: noun
Date: 1984
: any of various crimes (as assault or defacement of property) when motivated by hostility to the victim as a member of a group (as one based on color, creed, gender, or sexual orientation)
If the article as it is currently written is true, how is it anything other than a hate crime? I am not accusing the father of a hate crime. Again I say IF THE ARTICLE AS IT IS WRITTEN is true.
I have known this family my entire life and i can say for a fact that the kid only did this for revenge! he has been reporting false stories on his father for years now. His father has never judged or condemned him for being gay or whatever else! And his mom is very much in the picture and they have both tried EVERYTHING they could to help him! i think the people on here should not be so quick to blame the father and say he should go to jail. Especially if you dont know the whole truth
And I would contend to you that, even if the article is 100 percent accurate as written and the father did, indeed, attack the son for no other reason than the son's sexual preference, it is still no hate crime.
Like most fathers - and, I'm sure, like this one - I love my children. I often don't LIKE them, and I certainly don't LIKE some of the things they do.
In order to have a hate a "hate" crime, you must have an action based on, as you said, a person's race, creed, gender or sexual orientation.
And in order to ascribe a motive of HATE to that father, you would have to be either a mindreader or a goddess (God?) I truly suspect you are neither.
Perhaps he was just angry at the boy. Anger resulting in an action and hatred for an individual are not always the same, you know, even though in your mind it seems to be an automatic (reflexive) connection.

RE: Hate Crimes....aren't all crimes?
Thank you jillybean01!
I've known this family for a while now and they really are good people. They really love this kid despite the HELL he has put them through. But, I don't want to see them hurt or drug through the mud because of a simple act of revenge by this kid.
I can say that I've had dealings with this kid and know what he's capable of. He really needs help bad.
Im just glad that despite all the CRAP people have written, there is someone else who can stand up for the family!
Yeah, I know. There's always two sides to every story. We haven't heard the family's side yet.
I think if these people knew the situation, they wouldn't be saying half the crap they are.
This kid is no saint by a longshot.
AGAIN- IF WHAT YOU ARE SAYING IS TRUE....THE KID NEEDS TO BE CHARGED WITH FILING A FALSE POLICE REPORT - AFTER HE HAS MET THE BASEBALL BAT
Unfortunately, the father's name is already being dragged through the mud by people who choose to be judge, jury and executioner based on only an ALLEGATION that plays to their own prejudices.
There's an old saying in the newspaper business along the lines that a man can be ACCUSED in 48-point front-page headlines, but he is often exonerated under a tiny headline buried inside the paper. Let's see if that holds true here.
That's just one many reasons that either the ENTIRE story should have appeared here today, or no story. There was a time when newspapers wouldn't identify someone accused of a crime without an arrest warrant or, at the least, a copy of of a ticket. Even recently, I've seen articles saying something to the effect of, "(We) could not confirm the identity of the suspect through warrants before press time."
In this case, at press time there wasn't even a charge. Just a complaint. What has changed?
I don't mean to sound critical of a reporter or of the AIM. I'm not. Overall, I think they do a great job of presenting local news fairly and fully while dealing with issues that aren't always black and white.
This is possibly one of those issues, and I have a problem with their handling of it. And, before anybody asks, I do not personally know anybody involved in the case.
Arbitrarily elevating what is apparently a complicated incident involving a father and his son IN WHICH NO ONE WAS INJURED to newsworthy status is just irresponsible. It only serves to open the door to comments by the worst of both sides of gay rights and parental rights issues and does nothing to advance the discussion of either issue.
Again, that's just my opinion. Take it for what you think it's worth.
I just pray that one of these zealous gay right groups do not get a hold of this story and make it worse. I can just see that happening.
I just wish that the reporter had talked to the family. I really do. If he had, the story might not have seen print. This is a very personal story here.
I really wish I could put more details here about the incident. But, I'm not. Just pray for the family and the kid. He's the one who really needs help the most.
Scratch and clemson_girl, see you at the Chiquola!

Dear pennywise,
I am not sure which version of the story you saw, but when I posted early this morning; the last line of the first paragraph read (losely quoted as I did not save a copy of the original, and it has now been editied):
"...The father asserted his OWN sexual beliefs on the son with a baseball bat..."
This is what I was objecting to in Mr. Adams writing. Although I am not an Anderson resident, his writing style and reporting of the "Court Scene" in Anderson County is negative to the communtiy and makes the entire Southern population look like pages out of Tobacco Road.
I have many friends in your community; most are lovely and intelligent people. Naturally, their names are not found in the Crime Section of the Independent Mail. If you are a resident of Anderson, I should think you would object too.

Re..."I just hate queers!!!! YOU HAVE A LOT OF GROWING UP TO DO.....WAKE UP BEFORE YOUR KIDS ARE SEXUALLY ASSAULTED BY A QUEER!"
I would hope that you know the difference between homosexuals & pedophiles - they're entirely different groups of people. If you don't, please learn it.
The little punk must not have been hurt too bad Sunday or Wednesday. He waited 2 days after the bat attack and 8 hours after the punch to file a police report.
And I can't blame the dad here.....if my child had marched in a "gay pride" parade I would have beat his butt too. The Bible clearly states that a man should not lay with a man. And if you believe and preach one part of the Bible you must believe and preach it all.
in response to scmom
Right. . .that's why the father was beating the young man while "praying" and attempting to cast out the demon.
Can we say delusional here? I'd like to know what so-called "church" taught that man to behave like that to his own son. I'll project just enough to guess it is one of those "family values" institutions that specialize in tearing families apart.
in response to JDTippett
So, Tippett. . .you don't think it is possible for a father to be homophobic enough to attack his son?
I'm suddenly thinking about a case in Florida a couple of years ago, where the father beat his three year old son repeatedly in an effort to "toughen him up" because he was in fear the kid was going to grow up "gay." The kid died, and you can bet the parent invoked "religious" beliefs. . .
in response to ReaderRabbit
I did not become a Mom in 08, that is simply when I registered here. Also, I, myself was the victim of repeated sexual assault as a child so do not think for one minute that I excuse that behavior. There was not one mention in this article of a child being sexually assaulted and there should be no connection made between a homosexual individual and a pedophile.
