Halftime, Clover 21, Westside 10
Posted October 3, 2008
Clover’s “scrum offense” as Westside coach Ted Luckadoo referred to it earlier in the week, was nearly unstoppable in the first half. The Blue Eagles picked up 15 first downs on 30 rushes for 248 yards to take a 21-10 halftime lead at Westside Friday night on homecoming.
The Wing-T, which Clover ran to a state championship last season, utilized five ballcarriers in the first half as Ricky Moore and Max Elliott combined to lead the team with 184 yards. But Moore’s biggest contribution was on a punishing blow to Westside quarterback Brandon McCann with 42.4 seconds left in the half.
McCann, who was 8-for-14 with a touchdown, kept the ball on first and goal from the 9 yard line before Moore popped him at the line of scrimmage. It ended a 10-play drive that went 64 yards. The ball popped back to the 15-yard line where Clover pinballed to the 22. McCann remained on the field for several minutes, and walked off under his own power.
Clover scored on three of its first five drives. The Blue Eagles stalled themselves with a 15-yard illegal block penalty early in the second quarter. Then ran out of time, without timeout remaining, after recovering McCann’s fumble.
