third day--excel center

Posted September 3, 2008

yesterday afternoon, we trooped out of the hotel and boarded the buses for the ride to St. Paul. Somehow we managed to bypass all the protestors. I don't know if that's accidentally or on purpose. Inside the convention center, it was a Republican love fest. I was in heaven. The South Carolina delegation was to the left of the stage(How did that happen)

Leading up to the two main speakers was a long line of ordinary speakers talking about service to country--theirs and John McCains. Cindy McCain and children sat with the Arizona delegation for awhile. Roberta McCain was also in attendance and sat in the VIP box. President George H. W. Bush and Mrs. Bush also came in to a loud standing ovation.

I am sure most of the readers of this blog know that I could just be getting this stuff from the TV while I sit in my room at the hotel. But I was really there. There was a feeling of excitement building in the huge arena. The Texas delegation made quite a spectacle in red shirts and ten gallon hats. The Arizona delegation had on lt. blue denim shirts. The most interesting delegates were the ones from Alaska in yellow vests and hard hats that read "Drill here! Drill now!" What a sight to see all the delegates congregated on the floor. It was truly thrilling.

By far the highlight of the evening was the speech by Fred Thompson. He really took it to the Democrats. In the background, pictures of John McCain were displayed on a big screen. There was no Greek Temple, no deus ex machina, no pomp (well maybe a little) and a whole lot of circumstance. I could feel the excitement building as Sen. Thompson talked. And boy did he talked! Many people around me comment that if Fred had given speeches like that while he was a candidate he would be the nominee. Oh well. He did a fantastic job of giving his support to the nominee.

Oh yeah--Joe Lieberman gave a speech too

After the night's session ended, we all trekked to POP'S for a party with Jim DeMint. It was his birthday. Sorry to IBVA and Noeline but there was no milk, just birthday cake and lots of food. I will probably have to join the Y when I get back.

Now off to breakfast.
